Marceline Williams

Marceline (Nana) Roberts Williams passed away in her home on November 8, 2017 at the age of 102. Marceline was born on September 8, 1915 to Leslie Roberts and Pearlie May Smith Roberts in Muncie, Indiana.

After graduating from high school, Marceline moved to South Bend, Indiana and became a beloved member of her church. She joined Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church in 1936 and became the longest-standing member of the congregation. During her many years of service at Greater St. John, Marceline became a member of the gospel chorus, a Vacation Bible School teacher, a dedicated Sunday School participant, competed in the Ladies Church Bowling League, was a member of Missionary Circle #5, and contributed donations towards uniforms for the drill team, robes for the children’s choir, and the partition for the kitchen window. She also served as the church clerk for over 40 years and was secretary of the church pulpit committee.

Marceline was also passionate about community involvement. She became an active member of the NAACP, Urban League, and was the executive secretary and announcer for the Local Quartet Union which aired on WJVA Radio. Marceline was also an entrepreneur and created a daycare business that was in operation for over 50 years. Many children’s lives were positively affected by her daycare services.

Marceline is survived by her children, Corlette Beauchamp, Michael DeArmond, Craig (Cheryl) Williams, Samuel Williams Jr., Karen (Cottrell) Richmond, Kevin Williams, and Ronald Woodard; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 15 great great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and siblings.

Marceline was loved and cherished by many. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.
