Alonzo Curry Obituary

“The Love of a family is life’s greatest blessings”

Alonzo E. Curry

Mr. Alonzo Edward Curry, affectionately known as Zo, gained his wings on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at Regency Hospital in Portage, Indiana. He was 71. His wife and loving family were by his side. Alonzo was born in Elkhart, Indiana on May 26, 1951, to the union of Herman and Oneida (Owens) Curry.

Alonzo graduated from Elkhart High School in 1970 and received his first job with Mr. Campbell; a man who assisted with the care of the Curry family when their father passed away.   Zo’s work with Mr. Campbell enabled Zo to travel and experience a love for traveling. He went on to work as a Taxi Driver and later as a Meter Reader and quit that job when he was bitten by a dog. On August 2, 1976, Zo began his long-time career as a firefighter with the Elkhart Fire Department. He retired from EFD on December 30, 2008. Because of his strong work ethic and desire to keep busy, he always kept a part time job. His part time jobs included nine years at Martin Color-Fi, 19 years at Collins & Company and 18 months at Brinks. In 2005 he met Denise “Sherrell” Six, and they united in marriage on June 24, 2006.

Alonzo received the key to the City of Elkhart in 2010. He had a great love for kids and no matter where he went kids always smiled and played with him. He was well known for having the well-manicured lawn on the block. He loved watching his favorite team: the Chicago Bears, bowling, hanging out with the firefighters, maintaining his “old school” Chevy Station Wagon with his music blaring -- preferably Tupac and driving the Fire Truck. When Zo heard that siren he would perk up and get ready for action. There was never a day that he didn’t talk about the honorable men and women of the Elkhart Fire Department. More than anything else he most loved time spent with his family.

Zo leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife Sherrell; his daughters Melanie Curry of South Bend, Indiana and Shulena Curry of Charlotte, North Carolina; his son Tyree Curry of Indianapolis, Indiana; along with their mother and close friends Lois (and Albert) Hodges; his grandchildren Elijah Curry and Addison Curry of Charlotte; his children united in marriage with Sherrell, Shanin Brown, Jordan Six-Williams, Dyamond Jackson and grandchildren Kashmere Jackson, Kaia and Kehlani Six. He is also survived by his brothers, Herman Brent Curry, Kim (Darla) Curry, Micah (Stacy) Curry of Indianapolis, Edward (Marilyn) Curry; his sisters Peggy Thomas, Angela Curry, Regina Curry and Anita Curry of Indianapolis; additional siblings include Tony Bonds, Kenneth (Martha) McCreary, Sr., Brian Dungy, Elaine Stevens-Wesley; his mother and father-in-law Cheryl and Jerome McIntosh; sister-in-law Kelly( Jeff) Weidner, and Ronnie Clark, and a brother-in-law Shawn Reid; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, firefighter brothers and friends. Alonzo was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; a brother Kent; a sister Elaine and a granddaughter Layla Curry.

Alonzo was an extremely hard-working and dedicated man who loved his wife, family, firefighters, the Chicago Bears and all of his children. His legacy will live on through our works. ZO-strong
