Andre Bryant Buchanan was born on May 30, 1936 in South Bend, IN. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 1, 2015 surrounded by family and friends.
Andre graduated from Central High School in South Bend in 1954. He earned the title of "Everyone's Friend" in his high school year book. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army and served two years. Following his military service, he worked at a steel mill in Gary, Indiana. In 1960, he relocated to Hartford, Connecticut where he began employment with Pratt and Whitney. In 1962, he began his long career working for the United States Postal Service and retired in 1991 as a Labor Relations Representative.
Andre always established and maintained forever lasting relationships in his hometown, during his stint in the army, and while living in the Hartford, Connecticut area. In the last ten years, he reunited with high school classmates living in the Los Angeles area. Since that time, they have had annual luncheons sharing stories from the past.
Andre loved jazz music and had a large collection of CD's, tapes and albums.
He also loved traveling around the country visiting friends and family, especially his annual trip to Las Vegas. He was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing knowledge with those around him. He was a great story teller and loved sharing his life experiences and growing up in South Bend. Andre was a very caring person and initiated a scholarship program for children attending St. Augustine Church in South Bend.
Andre was the beloved son of the late James and Virginia Buchanan. He was preceded in death by his two siblings, James Buchanan and Laressa Buchanan-Lucas. Those who will cherish Andre's memories are his longtime partner and best friend, Doris Giles, his niece Michele (Donald) Price of Irvine, California, niece Vicki Buchanan of Dallas, Texas, nephew Gregory (Charlotte) Buchanan of Manhattan, Kansas, nephew Alan (Sonia) of Wichita, Kansas, niece Alicia Wimbley of Wichita, Kansas, niece Beth Buchanan of Indianapolis, Indiana and nephew Matthew Buchanan of Indianapolis, Indiana. He also had thirteen great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
A service of celebration was held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Henry L. Fuqua Funeral Service Chapel 94 Granby Street, Bloomfield, Ct.
