Calvin Manns Obituary

Deacon Calvin “Sonny” Manns, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 after a lengthy illness. Deacon Manns was born in Henning, Tennessee on March 14, 1934, to the Late Hiram Manns, Sr. and Pauline Watkins Manns. Deacon Manns grew up in Henning, Tennessee on “The Lane” and attended Lauderdale County Schools. One thing he was most proud of, in his childhood, was his employment with Alex Haley. In July 1956, he married Verlie Richmond and to this union five children were born. Along with his wife Verlie, their children Danny (Marilyn, deceased) Eric, Tammy, Elizabeth (Reginald) White, and Calvalyn will cherish his memory forever. He and his wife also raised Phillis Griffin Turley, their cousin, who preceded him in death. In 1958, he was Honorably discharged from the US Army. Deacon Manns was a faithful member of Macedonia MB Church for 50+ years until his failing health hindered his attendance. He was the Chairman of the Deacon Board, Male Chorus, Sunday School Superintendent, worked on the Finance committee and served several Pastors without question. He was a dedicated employee, having worked for Superior Waste, later Waste Management as a Senior Plant Manager until the age of 75. He also worked part time for Xtreme Clean Residential Cleaning Service, his granddaughter’s business, for three years after he retired. Family was very important to Deacon Manns. He was one of 17 children, all who preceded him in death. He spent nearly every summer vacation in Tennessee with his brothers and sisters at the family fish fry. In his spare time, he enjoyed picking up his grandchildren from school, cooking elaborate meals, cutting grass and doing odd jobs around the house. He leaves many happy memories with those that knew and loved him including 17 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends
