Christine Garth Obituary

Christine’s Journey #Devoted servant of Christ # loving committed, supportive and dedicated wife, mother, sister-in-law, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Christine’s life started like most. She was born on February 3, 1936, to Edd Caine and Clara Jones in Grenada, Mississippi. She lived there until her teenage years, when she then relocated to South Bend, Indiana with her mother and father, Dell Owens Sr. During her high school years, Christine expressed a desire to pursue a career in the nursing field and following graduation, she explored the health care field working at both St. Joseph and Memorial Hospitals. Also, at this time she met and married the love of her life, Jake Garth. They remained together for 58 years until his death in 2016. Understanding the importance of Christ and the family, in 1961, Christine began her relationship with the Catholic Church. She was baptized and confirmed at Saint Augustine Catholic Church. Christine and Jake shared their love of the Lord with their two children, Jerri and Rose. Jerri embraced this love until her death in October 2001. Christine emphasized the importance of service and instilled this value system in her children as well as other family members. Family meant everything to Christine. She enjoyed spending time with both her immediate and extended families. She loved when Ruben Richardson II and Craig Clark became members of her family. She would often say that she “was blessed to have two wonderful sons in law. Spending time with her grandson, Ruben Howard Richardson III, was the essence of her joy. Preparing pancakes for him during his summer visits until his death in October 2001 brought them both pleasure. As Christine aged, and her health declined, she became more dependent on others. She was thankful for the commitment that her family members and friends gave to her. She looked forward to her weekly visits from her sister-in-law, Josephine Kingsberry. Their love and respect for each other was endless. She also looked forward to weekly phone calls from her brother, Dell Owens, Jr. Christine always shared her astonishment on how much her nephew and niece, A.D. and Forestine Jackson loved and took care of her. Not only did they prepare delicious meals, but they were also available to her day and night. Visits from Ann Jacobs and the grandchildren often lifted Christine’s spirits. She loved how Ann shared God’s word, while anointing her with grace and comfort. Visits from her nieces Patricia Burdette, Cynthia Burton, Jackie Bonds, Elaine and Betty Crawford brightened her day. Christine last smile occurred when her best friend and cousin, Amy Baker, came to visit. The love was evident. Christine appreciated, as well as loved her caregiver, Lisa Smith Holly. She always looked forward to Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays on the days Lisa would come. Christine gained her wings on December 27, 2022, at 7:40 a.m. While Christine’s story ended like most, the footprints that she left on this earth and in our hearts were extraordinary. As her journey on earth has ended, Christine is survived by a daughter and son in law, Rose and Craig Clark of South Bend, Indiana. Special cousin/son, Robert (Kathy) Jackson of Chicago, Illinois. Four brothers in law: Winton Garth of Germany, Rufus (Francine) Garth of the Netherlands, Roosevelt Garth and James Garth both of Aberdeen, Mississippi. Sisters: Early B. Shelton of Marcellus, Michigan; Bonus daughters: Sandra (Clarence) Williams of Melbourne, Florida, Vicky Lawrence of Elkhart, Indiana and a host of Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins. Along with her parents, husband, daughter, and grandson, Christine was also preceded in death by her siblings, Artisha Newbill, Louise Blake, Edna “Dolly” Cobb, Oleavia Lottie, Myra Owens, James Owens and Hubert Owens, Sr., sister-in-law, Mary Crawford Williams and brothers in law, Willie and Harry Garth.  Christine’s Journey #Devoted servant of Christ # loving committed, supportive and dedicated wife, mother, sister-in-law, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.
