Dorothy Odom Obituary

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

Proverbs 31:26ESV

Mrs. Dorothy Lewis Odom was born on March 7, 1927, in Memphis, Tennessee to the union of the late Hannah (Nesbitt) and the late Jessie Harrison. She passed away in the comforts of her home on Sunday, November 5, 2023; she was 96 years old.

On April 10, 1945, she was united in marriage to the late Glenn Odom, Sr. To their union 10 children were born: Ruth, Glenn Jr., Mildred, Debra Elaine, Beverly, Samantha, Steven, Paul, Eric, and Stacey.

Mrs. Odom was a devout Christian and was a lifelong member of the church co-founded by her family: Laymen Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church. At Laymen Chapel she served as Usher, a Trustee and a Secretary throughout her years of membership. She was truly a Proverbs woman who loved her church and her church family.

Mrs. Odom was employed by Kressge/Kmart Corporation for 34-1/2 years. If you ever went to the former Kmart on Western Avenue, you were guaranteed a warm and cheerful greeting from her. Her kind and loving Christian spirit carried into the community where she assisted in feeding the hungry and served as Big Sister with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her children, Glenn Odom, Jr, Mildred (Ralph) Reed, Beverly Odom, Samantha Odom, Steven Odom and Stacey Odom; daughter/Sandra Harrison Holt; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, her church family and friends. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her three siblings, Mildred Govan, Jessie Harrison and Thelma Harrison and four children, Ruth Lee, Deborah Elain Rowell, Paul Odom and Eric Odom.

Mrs. Odom was a very loving and devoted mother and friend. She had a beautiful and welcoming smile. She always encouraged others with loving words of wisdom. She will be greatly missed by her family and the many others whose lives she impacted.

I would like to express the deepest appreciation to the BEST SISTERS EVER:  Mildred, Beverly, Sandra and Samantha for your love and kindness and being there for our need. Thanks to my dear brothers, Glenn Jr. and Steven for your love and support. A special thanks to Cousin Kathy for always being there, attending all events and always showing love and kindness. Love all of you, Stacey.
