Ernest Carter Obituary

Mr. Ernest Leon Carter 70, a resident at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation at 1122 E LaSalle, South Bend, IN passed away peacefully under Center for Hospice Care and family, Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Ernest was born October 21, 1952, in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Emmit Lee and Emma Viola (Bluntson) Carter who both preceded him in death.

Ernest confessed a hope in Christ Jesus at a young age being baptized under the leadership of the late Elder James R. Freeman, Jr. at O’Brien Street Bethel Tabernacle in South Bend.

Ernest graduated from John Adams High School. Continuing his educational career, he received his Associates in Business from Ivy Tech State College, where he continued to assist and tutor students in computer science and mathematics.  With a few jobs in between, Ernest’s last job was a seasonal clerk at South Bend’s Main Post Office on South Michigan Street for several years, until his illness.

He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings Armetha Maddox, Emmett (Alice) Carter, Nancy Jones, and Juanita (John) Townsell all of South Bend, special nieces whom he fondly called “Big” Mini-Me Yvette (Eugene) Winters, DeRidder, LA and Mini-Me Ashley Townsell, South Bend whom he always said; “lookin’ just like your mother, Juanita with a big smile. Nathan Townsell who he called; “Big Little John” often teasing – “Boya ya look just like yo daddy just a lil bigger”. We can’t forget Kash. a niece of Atlanta, GA, Michelle Thomas, and Donna Johnson both of South Bend.  Special cousins Willie Weathers of South Bend and Miriam Melton (Stanley) Jones of Philadelphia, MS. Along with a close family friend Cornelius Johnson (Poocho). Ernest often asked about his other nieces, nephews, and family members and Juanita would give him an update during their visits.
