Frances A. Carter, formerly of 219 S. Chestnut Street, passed from this life to glory on November 20, 2016. She was 94 years old.
Born in Paducha, Kentucky, she was the only child of Hettie Bell and Alonzo Benson. Raised in South Bend, she attended Kaley Elementary School and Central High School.
She married Thomas B. Carter in 1938. They were married for 64 years until he transitioned in 2002. Five children were born to their union – Frances Joan Wilson who passed away in 2009, Thomas D. Carter (Mildred), Ronald E. Carter (Jonetta), Gregory A. Carter (Audrey) and Sheryl C. Negash (Messele).
Frances was a lifelong member of New Bethel Tabernacle, where she attended regularly from the time that she was a child, until health issues limited her participation. She was a stay-at-home mom who also babysat many members of the community.
Frances loved cooking and baking. Her culinary treats were enjoyed by many and bragged about by most. Frances was known for her sage advice, willingly sharing tips and suggestions for making a happy home.
She spent her latter years in California with her children. Frances called herself a “California Hoosier.”
Frances touched many, but none more than her family. She was blessed with 24 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren.
