Born Jeannette Amos on December 23, 1924 in Niles, Michigan, Jeannette McNeill departed this life on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Healthwin Hospital, South Bend. She was 90 years old.
Jeannette had worked for the South Bend Community School Corp. (Linden and Muessel Schools) as a crossing guard where she was dubbed the "Patrol Lady" by the kids who knew her. She also worked for more than 40 years with the former Clark Funeral Home as an attendant and vocalist. This was a very important position as music and singing were her passion. She started singing at age seven. Her father, Mark Amos was a singer and member of a quartet called “The Harmony Four”. She would listen to them practice and knew all the songs. Jeannette got an opportunity to perform when one of the members became ill and couldn’t perform. As the saying goes, the rest was history. Everyone was excited by her performance and thus began her pursuit of music.
Although she was born as raised in church, she acknowledged and received Christ as her personal savior in her late sixties. She had been a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, Faith Christian Center, New Life Fellowship and most recently Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
Jeannette is survived by a daughter, Debra Jean Turner and sons Earl Townsend, Jr, Clifford Townsend and Aaron McNeill. Five grandchildren, Tasha and Jeffrey Townsend, Deanna Boykins and Danielle Boykins-Harris and Brianna McNeill; seven great-grandchildren, Ashlee Watson, Triniti Fennessee, Jequia Chapman, Jared Chapla, Tyija Townsend, Jeffrey Townsend, Jr. and A’Mayah Townsend also survive her.
Jeannette will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
