Jerry Price, Sr. Obituary

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.”   Proverbs 22:1

Mr. Jerry Edward Price Sr., 70, a lifetime resident of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, in his home. He was born on August 17, 1951, in South Bend to the late James and Georgia Price. He professed Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. William McRae at Grace AME Zion Church. Years later under the guidance of his dear friends, Minister Archie Shurn and Bishop Steven Reed, Jerry confessed with his mouth the belief in his heart that Jesus truly was the Lord of his life.

Jerry was affectionately known as “Big Jerry” and “Coach Price” by his friends and family. He was a 1968 graduate of the former LaSalle High School where he excelled in football, sang in the glee club, and met his high school sweetheart and wife of 52 years, Cassandra (Jones) Price. Jerry and Cassandra married on October 4, 1969, and had three beautiful children, Jerry Price Jr., Yuganda Price, and James Price and together they nurtured and loved them through everything.

Jerry started a career in coaching in 1983 and was employed as an assistant coach at Edison Middle School. In 1985 he served as an assistant coach for the freshman football team at LaSalle School. He coached football and track at LaSalle up until his youngest son, James played football. Jerry also worked at the Martin Luther King Center in the 1970s and was best known for his love of the West Side, his innovative and thoughtful initiatives, and his commitment to improving the quality of life for members of his community.

In May of 1996, Jerry graduated from Ivy Tech with a Technical Certificate in Business Administration. Jerry led a non- profit organization; All West Inc. and he fulfilled the need for those who experienced hunger/food disparity by providing resources. He was extremely passionate about being involved in political matters that impacted his community. If you knew Mr. Price, then you know he was an unforgettable and loving person. He loved to eat, especially his wife’s delicious food. He looked forward to Fish Fridays and loved cold beers with his friends.

Jerry Sr. leaves to cherish his loving memory, his three loving children, eight grandchildren, two great- grandchildren; brother, Louis James Price, sister, Anita Ferguson, uncle, John Lewis Ward, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends who celebrate his life and death. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother, Charles Price.

Jerry, husband, father, son, grandfather, brother uncle, cousin and friend will be missed by all who loved and knew him.
