Laura McKnight Obituary

Laura Ana McKnight, 83, dear mother, wife, sister, auntie, and great auntie of many. Entered eternal rest on Monday, June 1, 2026, at home. Mother Laura was born on April 24, 1943, in Shelby, Mississippi to the union of Andrew and Ruby Lee Carter.

At an early age, she migrated from Mississippi to South Bend, Indiana where she met her husband Allen McKnight and from that union came their son, Author McKnight. Her baby sister, Betty Carter, joined their household at the age 13 and later helped care for her in her home until the day she transitioned. Laura worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Visiting Nurse Association for 30 years where she later retired.

And you know Laura, she never really retired so she continued serving, both in the neighborhood and with the church. She was a minister, Sunday school teacher, an organizer and cook for the church, and a mentor. She was the tree that held the family branches together. She enjoyed fishing, going to the fair, praising the lord, and helping others. Laura McKnight was a true follower of Christ who touched many lives and she will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and younger siblings Larry Joe Carter, Irving Carter, Earl Carter, Andrew Carter, Billy Carter, Virginia Tallie, Vira May York, and Charles Carter. She is survived by her siblings Jimmy Carter, Ruby Lee Patton, and Betty Kariuki, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
