Born Mable C. Carter on July 10, 1944 in Duncan, Mississippi, Mable White departed this life on Wednesday, August 19 at Cardinal Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in South Bend, Indiana. She was 71 years old.
Following the death of her parents, Wallace and Montella (Brown) Carter, Mable relocated to Chicago, Illinois where she was raised by her Aunt Clara Willis and attended Parker High School.
It was in Chicago that she met and married Richard Thurmand and to that union four children, Darryl, Earline, Charles and Irene Thurmand were born.
Mable relocated to South Bend in 1965 where she joined Greater St. John M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor Bernard White. Mable accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and attended church on a regular basis. She sang with the Eveready Gospel Singers for some years.
She was an outgoing, fun and loving person who enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. She loved playing cards and games, had an affinity for sweets as well as macaroni and cheese.
Mable was a retiree of Honeywell Aerospace Corporation.
She and Isaac White were united in marriage in 1979 and remained at each other’s side until her death on Wednesday.
In addition to her parents, Mable was preceded in death by her four children, Darryl, Earline, Charles and Irene; four brothers, Jessie and Roosevelt Conigan and Henry and Wallace Carter, Jr.; three sisters, Leola Conigan, Phyllis Wright and Beatrice Carter, Aunt Clara Willis and a great-grandchild, Christopher Marquis Brown, Jr.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of thirty five years, Isaac White, 10 grandchildren, Latrissa and LaToya Thurmand of Elkhart, Kiyauna, Capreisha, Natasha, Darryl, Ashlay, Aaliyah and Tiyuana Thurmand and Dameion Powell of Chicago, IL. and 17 great-grandchildren, a sister, Clara (Zack) Cotton of South Bend, three brothers-in-law, Vocie White of Chicago, Russell and Raymond White of South Bend also survive her along with three sisters-in-law, Willa Bea Howard and Rosetta Porter of Chicago and Lucy Porter of Elkhart.
Along with many niece, nephews, others relatives and friends are three special friends, Carolyn Armstead, Barbara Anderson and Joy Tyson.
