Obituary

Mamiella Chavis Brown, 92 died on July 3, 2023. Mrs. Brown retired from South Bend Community School Corporation. She was born September 5, 1930, in Elkhart, IN to Leonard and Evelyn Chavis. On July 9, 1966, in Niles, MI she married George Alexander Brown. He preceded her in death. Mamiella is survived by her children Yvonne Whitelaw of New York City, NY, Quentin Whitelaw of Duluth, GA, Jan Vandever of Indianapolis, IN, Canonero Walter-Alexander Brown of Houston, TX, and a host of grand, great grand, and great-great grandchildren who love her dearly. Mamie is preceded in death by her brothers Levi Chavis, Arthur Chavis, Ollie Chavis, George Chavis, and Wardell Chavis. She is also preceded by two sons Jerome Whitelaw and Stacy Whitelaw. She was a member of NAACP (Lifetime), Berrien County Board of Social Services, League of Women Voters, Fourth District Peace and Justice Coalition, Business and Professional Women, Urban League, National Educational Association Committees, National Counselors Association, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and Saint Mary’s College Alumna Association.

Mamiella graduated from Elkhart High School June 4, 1964; Lake Michigan College May 28, 1978, St. Mary’s College May 19, 1979, and Indiana University August 31, 1983.

The Homegoing Mass for Mamiella will take place at her home church, St. Augustine Catholic Church 1501 W. Washington St. South Bend, IN 46628 on July 13, 2023. Viewing from 10 am – 11 am, Mass 11 am, Burial – Rice Cemetery, 400 James Street Elkhart, IN 46516. Repast - St. Augustine Catholic Church. May she rest in peace.
