Mattie McGhee Obituary

Mother Mattie Mae McGhee departed this life on January 8, 2022 at 5:15 pm at Elkhart General Hospital. She was born on June 21, 1939 in Levesque, Arkansas to the union of Mack Neal and Nicy Gary. She relocated to Elkhart, IN in 1951 and later married Joe Charles McGhee on Sept 25, 1955.

She was employed at Miles/Bayer for 35 years as an inspector.  She was a member of Community Missionary Baptist Church where for many years she diligently worked in many areas and auxiliaries such as a Sunday School teacher, Missionary Society teacher, Choir member, Usher Board member, Kitchen Committee, Vacation Bible School teacher and the Prison Ministry. She loved studying her bible and spending time with her family.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one son Joe Neal McGhee of Douglasville, GA; three daughters Virgie M. Gary, Jacqueline (Desineald) Williams, and Marqueline K. McGhee all of Elkhart; two sisters Veola Smith and her twin Hattie M. Clark, both of Elkhart.  She also leaves a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 61years Joe Charles McGhee, her sons Jerome McGhee and Jeffrey Gary, and her grandson Byron Gary. Also her brothers and sisters-in-law Clyde (Juanita) Riley Sr., Rev. Allen (Earlean) Gary, Rev. Otis (Brenda) Gary, her sisters and brother-in-law Mrs. Olivia (Joseph) Allen and Leola Gary, and brothers-in-law Ted Clark and Jake Smith.
