Melvin Earl Johnson, 62 of South Bend, IN made his transition from earth to glory on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at home with his family by his side. Melvin Earl was greeted in heaven by his earthly father, Freeman Johnson, his two brothers Richie and David and his beautiful sister Sharon. He is rejoicing with his family and friends right now. He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife Linda: 2 sons; DaMon and Melvin II both of South Bend; 3 daughters, Ayana (Alvin) Haynes of Atlanta, GA. Chisa (Torrence) Taylor and Kristen (Arttis) Patterson, 13 grandchildren and 1 great-daughter He is also survived by his mother Emma Cranford and 3 brothers, Freeman (Pam) Johnson, Raymond (Pat) Johnson, Kenny (Jamie) Johnson all of South Bend and one sister Tina Herron of Hamden, CT.
Melvin LOVED his family and friends, he wanted reassurance from them that they would take care of his beautiful wife. He enjoyed singing, working on cars, golf, grilling, gardening and tinkering around the house, but there was nothing that gave him more joy than family time. All the grandkids looked forward to fun time with Popi '.
Melvin accepted the Lord in his life with gladness. He was a faithful member of Greater St John Missionary Baptist Church where he was former Sunday School Superintendent and former member of the mass choir and he also served as a Deacon. It was His love and dedication of singing that led him to co-write, co-produce, and co-engineered a song for the gospel group M.O.G. (Men of God) "Lord I Found You"
Anytime there was a special event at church you’d find Deacon Johnson somewhere around the church setting up, organizing, grilling or just lending a hand. He was truly a servant and served with great joy.
Melvin truly loved the Lord! He fought a courageous battle and boldly shared his testimony of faith until the end. For those of you who had the opportunity to visit during his illness Melvin had a way of uplifting YOUR spirit. He was such an encourager that when visitors went to see him they left the visit encouraged. You just couldn’t leave his room without hearing of his dream regarding the Lion of Judah and walking on water. After leaving his room you felt like you were walking on water!
