Robert Stokes Obituary

Robert W. Stokes was born on January 20, 1952 in South Bend Indiana the 6th child of Charlie I. and Alberta (McGlaun) Stokes..

Robert attended South Bend Community schools, Linden Elementary and Central Jr HS.  He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1972 and enlisted in the US Army after high school.  He was honorably discharged in November 4, 1986.  After leaving the Army, Robert resided in California until moving back to South Bend with his daughter Jennifer, the love of his life. He was employed with the US Postal Service for more than 40 years.

Robert, though a quiet man, would give the shirt off of his back and the food off of his plate. Robert was a hardworking man and never let his daughters go without. He was a true example of a selfless human being and will be truly missed by many.

Robert enjoyed working on cars and repairing bikes.  He repaired the neighbor's kids' bikes.  He truly loved his watermelon, traveling and going to casinos. 

Robert made his transition peacefully on July 15, 2020.  He is survived by his loving daughters, Jennifer (Clarissa Cooper) Stokes of South Bend, Indiana and Ursula Kilgore of South Bend Indiana.  Grandson:  Triston Banks of South Bend IN and granddaughter Heaven Hannah of South Bend, IN. 

Also surviving Robert are his siblings:  Arthur Eugene (Carol) Stokes of Bloomington IN, Charlene Stokes (Gene) of Southfield MI, Edward R. Stokes of South Bend, IN, Ruthie Harris of Grand Rapids, MI, Jimmie (Dorothy) Stokes of Van Buren, MI, Shirley (Robert) Wilson, South Bend, IN, Wilbert Stokes of South Bend, IN and Gwendolyn (Willie) Horne of Westland MI; an uncle, Robert (Girlie) McGlown of Belleville MI, an aunt, Carrie McGlaun of Southfield MI and a  host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Among whom are special friends:  Mary Stokes Chism of South Bend IN, Diane Freeman of Rochester NY, Dennis Gaines of Dana Point CA, Francine Williams and McCreary Family of South Bend IN.  His extended Sibley Street families:  Prices, Shaws, Gaines, Freemans and Bishops.   

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie I. and Alberta (McGlaun) Stokes, granddaughter Jada Hannah, nephews: Andre Guyton, Jermel and Jonathan Stokes and Shawn Stokes Poindexter Jr. 

Special thanks to Memorial Hospital ICU unit for the loving caring of Robert during his time of illness.
